Our day in Santa Fe









 We have welcomed winter here, woke to 30 degrees! So our touring today was NOT on the Goldwing 😔. We drove north to Taos via the “high road” through the mountains and yes that is snow on the roadside!

Our return trip to Santa Fe was along the Rio Grande river. The trees along the the route where changing, it was a beautiful ride. 











Along the way we stopped at the Rio Grande gorge bridge which is one of the highest bridges (600 ft over the river) on the US Hwy system, and a great place to spot a few long horn sheep. 


We made our way back to the city of Santa Fe and spent some time walking around the plaza. We stopped in at the Loretta Chapel to see the miraculous spiral staircase: legend has it that the architect died before completing a staircase to the choir loft so the sisters prayed a 9 day novena and a carpenter mysteriously appeared, built the spiral staircase and then mysteriously disappeared after it was completed. The original staircase without railing or support was self supported on the lowest rung.

 Another grand day! We decided since there was so much to see at the Grand Canyon, it needed another visit, so today we took the more scenic route and returned.  We passed interesting sites like this abandoned hotel, which was part of the Painted Desert Project which was started by a Navajo Nation physician. In addition to the many beautiful vistas we also visited the Desert View Watch tower  which was one of many structures designed by Mary Colter.  Today we made our way along the southern rim from the Bright Angel Trailhead ( you can make out the trail hundreds of feet below in the last photo) to the Hermit Trailhead. The pictures hardly do the views justice. As we were leaving the park we had the opportunity to view the local wild life grazing along the roadside.

 Well just when I thought I had nothing of interest to share on our blog….well I think the photo is worth a thousand words - the first one being WHOOPS! 😳 With the help of a few strong neighbors, we were able to get the bike back into the trailer so that we could drop the platform this time before backing out 😂. Time to come home!

 Farewell Flagstaff. Today we began our journey home. First stop was Winslow AZ, ( Such a fine site to see ). Rob was even standing on the corner near the flat bed Ford. 😉 I feel my blog wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t include at least one food photo, and today was the day! We stopped for breakfast at one of Derald’s fabulous suggestions ; La Posado, where I enjoyed “The Corn Maiden’s Delight”, and it was!  We arrived at our campsite early enough to set up and then drove the 28 mile road through the Petrified Forest National Park. Colorful small shards to massive trunks of petrified wood are strewn across the landscape. It is hard to believe that a pine forest once existed here millions of years ago, which was also the stomping ground of dinosaurs.   We then took the scenic drive on through the Painted dessert.
